Human Remains

A friend, a family member passed on. I need to transport their remains to another country, who do I contact?
BWee Cargo can transport human remains between any destination we service. Human remains will only be accepted for transportation by air once it is embalmed or cremated.

When not cremated, human remains must be contained in a hermetically sealed lead or zinc inner coffin. The wooden coffin may be protected from damage by outer packing and covered by canvas or tarpaulin so that the nature of its content is not apparent.

Cremated human remains must be shipped in funeral urns, which must be efficiently cushioned with suitable packaging to avoid breakage.

How much notice do I need to give BWIA?
Before BWIA accepts this item as cargo, the booking for the entire transportation including any connecting flights must have been confirmed. You will need to contact the local BWee Cargo at least 48 hours prior to your confirm flight departure.

What documentation do I need to complete?
Arrangements for the transportation of human remains between countries can only be done between funeral homes.

Your funeral home will need to:

  1. Get permission from the Ministry of Health and/or Ministry of National Security (where applicable), for the importation of the body into the respective country prior to shipment
  2. Arrange a burial transit permit from your local registrar, as the remains must be accompanied with the permit. The permit must indicate the place of death.
  3. Would need to embalm the body by arterial and cavity treatment, to be attested to by a notarized statement and a description of the fact of embalming by the Embalmer.

You will need to get a certified copy of the death certificate indicating the cause of death.

You will need to provide the Cargo department with the names of the funeral agencies, at the point of departure and arrival.

What will it cost?
The charge for transporting human remains will be assessed as follows: -

Not cremated - coffin dimensions i.e. length, width, and height plus total weight of coffin including body.

Cremated - weight of urn.
