BWIA will give the greatest care when handling your pet or live
animals. Particular care must be taken to give the greatest possible
sense of security to animals not accustomed to humans. When your
pet is awaiting dispatch or delivery, they will be held in areas,

These dogs
must be muzzled and harnessed while positioned at the passenger's
feet in the cabin. If possible, an empty seat may be kept for the
dog so that it will not inconvenience the other passengers or the
Flight Attendants in the performance of their duties, as well as
provide added comfort to other passengers.
Under certain operating conditions, such as long haul non-stop
flights, or on certain types of aircraft, it may be impractical
to carry a dog on the aircraft. Under such conditions, transportation
in the cabin will be refused. Guide Dogs when being transported
to the United Kingdom, may only be carried in a nose and paw-proof
crate or container as manifested Cargo covered by an Air Waybill
and not as baggage.
Special attention should be paid to the following points:

What type of container do I use for carriage?
The container shall be constructed in a manner, which will permit
handling staff to give the necessary attention to the animal without
risk of the animals harming or causing injury to themselves. Our
BWIA Cargo office, prior to shipping must approve the size and total
weight of container.
Furthermore, the bottom of the container must be covered with an
adequate layer of moisture absorbing material, such as wood shavings
or sawdust. Due to agricultural regulations imposed by a large number
of countries, straw as an absorbent material is to be avoided.
What is the cost to ship my pet?
The charge for accompanied pets is the same as for excess
baggage. Excess baggage charges apply to accompanied pets. Unaccompanied
pets are accepted as Cargo at cargo
rates. Pets are not accepted to the United Kingdom as excess baggage,
they must be sent as cargo.
For transportation where the weight concept applies, the rate will
be 1% of the first class one-way fare per kilogram. The weight charges
will be that of the pet plus the container. For transportation where
the piece concept applies, those rates would be charged. Please
call our reservations office
for these calculations.
Guide Dogs will be carried free of charge when accompanying passengers
who are dependant on them, irrespective of weight.
Interlining
When more than one carrier is involved in transportation, pets and
other live animals will only be accepted for carriage if advance
arrangements have been made, and confirmation has been obtained
that all participating carriers can accept the consignment over
the routes concerned.
Feeding Your Pet
Generally it is not necessary to feed an animal intransit, though
certain species may need water depending on climatic conditions
and total journey time. Any water provided should be fresh and uncontaminated,
preferably suitable for human consumption and shall not be iced.
Any packets of spare food provided by the shipper shall be attached
to the container. Food and water troughs must be fitted with outside
filters.
When the owner provides food for the animal, it should be established
that the food does not contravene the import regulations of the
country or countries of transit and importation.
Where it is necessary to feed or water an animal during the journey,
it is the owner's responsibility to make advance arrangements for
it.
