Sporting Equipment & Musical Instruments:

BWIA uses both piece and weight baggage allowance concepts.

The weight concept (WC) applies to travel between: Antigua, Barbados, Caracas, Georgetown, Grenada, Paramaribo, Trinidad, St Lucia and Tobago.

The piece concept (PC) applies to travel between: Havana, Dulles, JFK, Kingston, London, Manchester, Miami, Santo Domingo, San Jose, St Maarten and Toronto.

Special Pieces (applies to Canada only)
In lieu of the free baggage allowance, any articles listed below, regardless of the actual dimensions, shall be accepted as a piece of baggage at 158 cm (62 ins.).

  • 1 sleeping bag or bedroll
  • 1 rucksack / knapsack / backpack
  • 1 duffel or B-4 bag. Duffel bag means a canvas cylindrical shaped bag, folded and fastened at one end. B-4 bag means a suitcase type of handbag made of canvas with leather and metal bindings and fittings, with expandable canvas compartments on two sides of the bag.

Bicycles
One (1) single seat, non-motorised, touring or racing bicycle, provided it is placed in a cardboard container, or pedals and handlebars are encased in plastic foam, or handlebars are fixed sideways and pedals removed. In the interest of safety, tyres should be partially deflated. Applies to Canada only: You are allowed one piece in lieu of a passenger’s free piece allowance. When in excess, additional baggage charges shall apply. PC: This item does not form part of your free checked baggage allowance except when travelling to/from Canada; additional baggage charges will be applied per piece, whether or not you are travelling with only one piece. WC: Additional baggage charges will apply.

Camping Equipment
Camping equipment consists of a portable backpack containing (back-pack, bedroll, knapsack, rucksack, sleeping bag or tent sack), or one cylinder shaped pull cord closing bag (duffel bag, sea bag, or kitbag), one soft case with expandable side compartments.
PC: You are allowed one piece in lieu of a free piece allowance. When in excess, additional baggage charges will apply. WC: This does not form part of your free baggage allowance but will be accepted once the weight does not exceed your free checked baggage allowance. When in excess, additional baggage charges will apply.

Fishing Equipment
Fishing equipment may only be accepted when it is properly encased. It consists of 1 fishing tackle box, 1 landing net, 1 pair of fishing boots, 1 reel, and 2 rods. PC: You are allowed one set of fishing equipment at 158 cm. (62 ins.) in lieu of your free piece allowance. When in excess, additional baggage charges shall apply. WC: You are allowed any quantity of fishing/angling equipment up to 15 kgs., (and this must be contained in not more than one tackle box, haversack or angler’s basket) plus 1 rod, bag or box, may be carried at a special additional baggage charge, computed as 4 kgs. of the applicable additional baggage charge. The charge is only assessed when the fishing equipment is not included in the normal checked free baggage allowance. Any overweight shall be computed at the above special additional rate charge or the normal baggage, whichever is less. For any weight of fishing equipment in excess of 15 kgs., the normal additional baggage charge shall apply.

Golfing Gear
Golfing gear consists of 1 golf bag, 14 golf clubs, 12 golf balls, and 1 pair of golf shoes. Applies to Canada only: One set of golfing gear shall be included in determining the free baggage allowance and if in excess, shall be computed as 50% of the applicable additional baggage charge. You are allowed one set of golfing gear and any additional gear will be subject to additional baggage charges. PC: You are allowed 1 set of golfing gear in lieu of a passenger’s free piece allowance. When in excess, additional baggage charges shall apply. WC: When the total weight of your bags including the golfing equipment, exceeds your free baggage allowance, then the special additional baggage charged will be computed as 4 kgs., shall apply for a golf bag weighing up to 15 kgs. (33 lbs.) If the weight exceeds 15 kgs. (33 lbs.), then the special additional rate charge for 4 kgs., shall apply for the first 15 kgs. (33 lbs.), and the normal additional rate shall apply for the remaining weight.

Surfboards
You are allowed one fibreglass-finned surfboard and paddle with total measurements not exceeding 158 cm. (62 ins.). Applies to Canada only: This item does not form part of your checked baggage allowance and will be charged as follows: *1 board not exceeding 277 cm. (109 ins.) to be charged at 50% of one additional baggage. *1 board exceeding 277 cm. (109 ins.) to be charged at one additional baggage. *Any additional boards will be charged the applicable additional baggage rate. PC: This item does not form part of your free piece allowance; additional baggage charges will apply per piece, whether you are travelling with only one piece. WC: This item does not form part of your checked baggage allowance and will be charged as follows: *1 board not exceeding 277 cm. (109 ins.) to be charged at the applicable rate for 5 kgs. ( lbs.) of additional baggage. *1 board exceeding 277 cm. (109 ins.) to be charged at the applicable rate for 8 kgs. ( lbs.) of additional baggage. *Any additional boards will be charged the applicable additional baggage rate.

Scuba/Diving Equipment
Scuba/diving equipment consisting of not more than one (1) each of the following: empty scuba tank, air supply regulator, tank pressure gauge, tank harness, face mask, pair of diving fins, snorkel, knife, safety vest, air pistol, spear gun, and a weight belt. Knives must be carried in checked baggage, spear guns must be unloaded with spears packed separately, and compressed air/gas tanks will be accepted only if empty and open. Flares will not be accepted. Applies to Canada only: Securely packed in one bag, this shall be included in determining the free baggage allowance and if in excess, shall be computed as 50% of the applicable additional baggage charge. PC: This will be accepted as a piece in lieu of a passenger’s free piece allowance and if in excess, the applicable additional charges will apply whether you are travelling with only one piece. WC: Scuba/diving equipment shall not form part of free baggage allowance but will be accepted once the weight does not exceed 25 kgs. (55 lbs.). Normal additional baggage charges shall apply.

Windsurf Equipment
One item of windsurfing equipment consists of 1 board, 1 wooden boom, and 1 mask and sail. PC: This item does not form part of your free piece allowance; additional baggage charges will apply per piece whether you are travelling with only one piece. WC: This does not form part of free baggage allowance but will be accepted once the weight does not exceed free checked baggage allowance. Normal excess baggage charges shall apply.

Snow Skiing Equipment
Snow ski equipment is defined as 1 pair of snow skis, 1 pair of ski poles and 1 pair of ski boots. Applies to Canada only: This forms part of a free piece allowance and if in excess, shall be computed as 33% of the applicable baggage charge. However only 1 set snow skiing equipment shall be included in your free baggage allowance. Any sets in excess of one shall not be included in the free baggage allowance and shall be assessed at the applicable additional baggage charge. PC: This item does not form part of your free piece allowance; additional baggage charges will apply per piece. WC: This does not form part of free baggage allowance but will be accepted once the weight does not exceed free checked baggage allowance. Normal excess baggage charges shall apply.

Musical Instrument:
A musical instrument is defined as an instrument with dimensions not exceeding 100 cm. (39 ins.), suitable packaged. PC: You are allowed 1 piece in lieu of a passenger’s free piece allowance. When in excess, additional baggage charges shall apply whether you are travelling with only one piece. WC: Additional baggage charges will apply.
